The work of addressing ghost fishing gear continues as part of our ongoing commitment to protecting Lake Victoria and the livelihoods that depend on it. 🌊♻️ Our team carried out a ghost gear cleanup on Bazi Island, located in Ilemela District, an island that is home to a vibrant fishing community. Abandoned, Lost, and Discarded Fishing Gear #ALDFG poses serious risks to fish stocks, aquatic habitats, lake ecology and the safety of fishers, making this work both urgent and necessary..
After collecting the ghost fishing gear, we moved to the next critical step: sorting and categorizing the gear. This process supports recycling, proper disposal, and data collection, helping us better understand the types, sources, and scale of ghost gear affecting Lake Victoria. The data gathered will inform future prevention strategies and policy discussions. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Base Island Beach Management Units (#BMUs) for their strong participation and collaboration throughout the activity. Working together with local communities remains central to achieving long-term, sustainable solutions for a cleaner and healthier lake.
