On World Cleanup Day, Blue Victoria proudly joined forces with youth, community actors, and partners to conduct a clean-up exercise along River Milongo, a critical waterway that flows directly into Lake Victoria and runs through the heart of Mwanza City. This activity brought together passionate individuals committed to protecting our environment and safeguarding one of Africa’s most important freshwater ecosystems. River Milongo plays a significant role in the health of Lake Victoria, yet like many urban rivers, it is increasingly affected by pollution from plastic waste, domestic discharge, and poor waste management practices. During the cleanup, participants collected large amounts of waste from the riverbanks and surrounding areas, helping to reduce the flow of pollutants into the lake. Beyond the physical cleanup, the activity served as a powerful platform to raise awareness among community members about the direct connection between river pollution and the health of Lake Victoria.
Through community engagement, discussions, and awareness messages, we emphasized the importance of responsible waste management, environmental stewardship, and collective action. Lake Victoria is a lifeline for millions of people, supporting fisheries, biodiversity, transportation, and local economies. Protecting it starts with small, consistent actions within our communities. This initiative demonstrated the power of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges. By working together, we can reduce pollution, restore our waterways, and build a culture of environmental responsibility. Blue Victoria remains committed to engaging communities, especially youth, in practical actions that protect freshwater ecosystems and promote sustainable living. Together, we can secure a cleaner, healthier future for Lake Victoria and generations to come. 🌱✨
