Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Water Resource Management

Cpacity Building to WUAs- Mara River

Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Water Resource Management 💧👩‍🌾

Blue Victoria, in collaboration with the Lake Victoria Basin Water Board- Mara Catchment, has conducted a series of capacity-building sessions with eight Water User Associations (WUAs) across Serengeti, Rorya, Tarime, and Butiama districts—areas through which the Mara River flows. These engagements aimed to strengthen women’s leadership and enhance community participation in sustainable water resource management across the Mara River Basin. Each session was highly interactive, providing a platform for WUA members to share experiences, challenges, and local solutions in managing water resources. Key issues discussed included water scarcity, pollution, competing water uses, and the need for stronger governance structures. Through participatory discussions, communities identified practical actions to improve water conservation and management at the local level.

A strong message emerged on the importance of inclusive leadership. As emphasized during the sessions, “When women are involved in leadership, they are trustworthy, reliable, and highly accountable.” Empowering women in water governance is essential for building transparent, effective, and sustainable management systems. At the end of each session, participants committed to taking action within their communities by raising awareness and promoting the protection of water sources. Blue Victoria remains dedicated to strengthening local leadership, fostering collaboration, and supporting community-driven solutions for sustainable water management in the Mara River Basin.
