As you see, this is not a green pitch—it’s an invasive species. The water surface of Mwanza Gulf, a critical Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) in Lake Victoria, has been heavily invaded by Salvinia molesta, a fast-spreading aquatic weed that poses serious threats to the lake’s ecosystem and water quality. The rapid spread of Salvinia molesta forms dense mats on the water surface, blocking sunlight, reducing oxygen levels, and disrupting aquatic life, including fish breeding habitats. It also interferes with fishing activities, water transport, and overall lake productivity, directly affecting the livelihoods of communities that depend on Lake Victoria.
In response to this growing challenge, Blue Victoria has partnered with key stakeholders including the Mwanza Regional Office, National Environment Management Council (NEMC), Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute, TPHPA, and the Lake Victoria Basin Water Board to take coordinated action in removing this invasive species. This collaboration brings together expertise, resources, and community engagement to effectively manage and control the spread of the weed. This joint effort marks an important step toward restoring the ecological balance of Lake Victoria, improving water quality, and protecting biodiversity and livelihoods. Blue Victoria remains committed to working with partners and communities to combat environmental threats and ensure a healthy, resilient lake for future generations.
